We all invest a significant amount of money and energy to choose and buy furniture for our homes, offices, and workplaces. As an expression of our individuality, it pains us to see them dirty after use. Timely sofa cleaning eliminates dirt, stains, grime, and odor while maintaining the overall appearance, textures, colors, and life of your upholstery. Along with regular cleaning by yourself, it is recommended to get a sofa cleaning service once or twice a year depending on the condition and use of your upholstery.

Sofas usually come in different fabrics like synthetic fibers (polyester, olefin, nylon, or acrylic), natural fibers (wool, cotton, velvet, or silk), or made of leather. Leather is comparatively durable and easy to clean and wipe out dust and dirt. On the other hand, fabric can absorbs stains easily and thus one needs to clean fabric sofas with proper care.

When getting sofa cleaning services from any professional or company, we all must know the proper procedure of sofa cleaning to get a better service according to the type of upholstery at your home or office.

Process of Sofa Cleaning

There are three major steps to cleaning a fabric upholstered sofa.

  1. Application of the appropriate detergent

The first step of upholstery cleaning is to apply detergent. Depending on the type of stain, enzyme-based detergents work best. The detergent works to soften up the stains and or the dirt while also acting as a lubricant to ease the scrubbing. Use detergents according to the type of fabric and the nature of the stains. Since most dirt and stains on sitting surfaces are organic ( food, drinks, etc.). So, active enzyme-based detergents usually work best. A spot test is always a better idea before going through the cleaning process to check for any bleaching effects of the detergent on the fabric.

  1. Mechanical agitation (Scrubbing)

The next step is mechanical agitation. Scrubbing can be done manually by using a soft bristle brush or an electric-powered scrubber. Ensure there is enough detergent to assist as lubrication for the scrubbing process. Don’t use a hard brush to scrub the sofa seats. The intensity of scrubbing can vary based on the type of fabric and stains.

  1. Extraction/Washing

The last step is extraction. This step involves the use of a water extraction machine. The machine is designed to spray water and vacuum it up effectively forming a loop to wash and then extract the dirt and the detergent.

Some individuals and service providers use vacuum cleaners for this final step. Using a vacuum cleaner can leave residual detergent in the fabric, which can lead to discoloration over long periods.

Pro tip

Use warm water for both the dilution of the detergent before applying it and in the water extractor. Warm water works significantly better than room temperature or cold water to loosen up any dirt or grease.
