WATER TANK CLEANING SERVICE: A GUIDE

By June 28, 2022August 31st, 2022No Comments

We can’t deny the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in our lives. And among all other things, clean water is a basic necessity. In our homes, we store water mostly in large tanks for different purposes, and like other things, the water tank cleaning process is essential to save ourselves from different unseen micro-organisms and harmful diseases. Here is a brief discussion to help you know why it is important and how the process of cleaning is carried out.

Why water tank cleaning is necessary

With depleting reservoirs and the rising demands of an ever-increasing population, storage and conservative use of water are a necessity. Most residential societies are now introducing construction by-laws making it necessary to have both underground and rooftop water tanks.

While optimal water storage capacities are the way forward, they do bring along a set of unique issues. Stored water irrespective of its source or chemical treatment will lead to sediment deposits. Over time this sediment deposit can cause:

  1. Reduced storage capacity
  2. Blocked pipes, bad water pressure
  3. Clogged faucets
  4. Reduced life of motor and pressure pump
  5. Increased bacteria contamination of water, causing skin diseases and gastric issues

Process of water tank cleaning

Water tank cleaning is not a complex procedure but a tedious one. Let’s have a look at the tank cleaning process.

  • The tank is drained of the water, low sediment deposits are usually cleared during this draining.
  • If the sediment levels have been in the base for a long time, then the sediment has to be physically removed.
  • The next step is to manually clean the walls of the tank with wire brushes applying chlorine or acidic chemicals, while a safer alternative is to use granulated salt. Salt has excellent antibacterial properties while remaining completely non-toxic for human use.
  • After the walls, the base of the tank is cleaned manually with wire brushes and a salt solution or cleaning chemicals.
  • After a thorough cleaning, the next step is to drain water from the tank and add fresh water to remove all salts and cleaning agents.

To maintain the overall health of the water system in your house, this procedure must be carried out annually or twice a year depending on the source of water to your residence.

Some General TipsĀ

Here are some general tips to follow before constructing water tanks at your home and getting cleaning services.

  1. Suggest a time slot to your service provider preferably 3 hours before your next scheduled water inflow timing for your residential area. You will be out of the water after the tank cleaning till your next scheduled water supply time. (This is not applicable where an underground water tank is also available)
  2. Since the tank has to be drained of its contents before cleaning, close off the water supply valve a few hours before the tank cleaning to reduce the wastage of water.
  3. As the porous concrete surface tends to absorb the cleaning chemical so cement water tanks must be tiled. When constructing a new house do consider putting ceramic tiles on the wall and the base of your water tank. It would have a significant impact on the cleanliness of the water and reduce the maintenance requirements of the tank.
