During the summertime, ac is one of the most used home appliances and we often neglect the fact that an air conditioner also needs regular maintenance and service to work properly along with a longer life span. Getting your ac service timely is one of the important tasks for the health of your ac. Let’s have a look at some tips which we need to keep in mind to utilize your money in a better way for better ac service.
1. Timely cleaning of ac filters
An important ac maintenance task that you can do at home is to regularly clean ac dust filters. Dirty/choked air filters often need more energy to operate, resulting in increased electricity bills, ineffective cooling, and clogged filters. It can result in a reduced amount of airflow causing the ac compressor to run for longer and ultimately diminish the ac efficiency.
2. Avoid ac dismantling for service
Avoid service that needs the ac dismantled. It can cause minor gas leakage. Corroded copper pipes can also break if dismantled and installed again.
3. Use of pressure washer for servicing
Ensure that the service provider uses a pressure washer to clean the ac condenser and evaporator. This applies to both scenarios either if dismantled or mounted on the wall. Service without a pressure washer will not be sufficient and effective.
4. Intensity of pressure washer
The pressure washer should have sufficient pressure to wash through the fins of the evaporator and the condenser. But, not too strong that it bends the fins or damages them. Hence, avoid a seasonal technician as an experienced technician can do this task properly in an expert manner.
5. Disconnect from power source before service
Turn off and disconnect the ac from the power source before washing. Also, cover the electronic components like PCB kit, etc. properly.
6. Use non-corrosive detergent spray
Encourage using a non-corrosive detergent spray on the components before the pressure washing. This disinfects the ac components. In some cases, a bad odor is present so a detergent spray will remove the odor-producing bacteria while softening the dirt and grime buildup.
7. Check working before ac service
Before servicing, your service provider must check the refrigerant gas levels and the operation of the ac. If the ac is functioning properly, then it is the service provider’s responsibility that it is working well after the service.
8. Check leakage and repair before service
Usually, gas pressure for a working ac does not require a top-up or refilling. This is often used as means of charging extra amounts from the client. If the pressure is lower than the specified pressure then this usually means that there is a refrigerant gas leak. The leak must be repaired before the ac service. Even if the service provider insists to service your ac without the repair.
9. Weigh the gas cylinder before and after refilling
Refrigerant gas top-ups should be in weight. Ask your service provider to weigh the gas cylinder before and after the top up or refilling. It is to determine the weight of the refrigerant that was used. The refrigerant gas is now an expensive commodity and should only be paid for as much as refilled.
10. Inform service provider about hard to reach AC
You must inform any limitations of the accessibility to the outdoor unit of your ac. For example, installed at an unreachable height in case of apartment buildings or poor access to the unit due to a wall or other utilities nearby. In case it comes as a surprise to the service provider once they reach your premises, they might be tempted to cut corners and not service the outdoor unit properly.
11. Ac service depends on usage and environment
Service intervals are dependent on your usage and environment. Commercial usage spaces need more frequent servicing.
